On 28th November 1975, Timor-Leste declared itself an independent state after more than 400 years of Portuguese colonisation. Since that historic day, the country has been known as the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.
A Date That Lives in Memory
The 39th anniversary is a remarkable occasion for the Timorese people, bringing back memories of their first president, Nicolau Lobato — also the first leader of the Armed Resistance. His courage and sacrifice remain a central part of the national story.
Celebrations Across All 13 Districts
All 13 districts joined in the commemorations. Former leaders of the Resistance, as well as Timorese citizens who contributed to the struggle for freedom, were awarded with medals in recognition of their dedication to an independent and sovereign Timor-Leste.
Looking Forward
The anniversary is not only a moment of reflection but also a call to action. It is an invitation for the Timorese community and visitors alike to support the continued development and growth of this young, resilient nation. Let’s join this celebration and continue to help develop and improve our beloved Timor-Leste.
