If you are thinking about the things you can’t miss in Timor-Leste, you have arrived at the right place. It is a combination of finding picture-perfect spots, snorkelling at sea, and seeking out colour in nature. Here are seven unmissable experiences waiting for you.

Dili and the Capital Region

1. Climb to Cristo Rei of Dili

A relatively easy climb up a long staircase, Cristo Rei rewards you at the top with wonderful views across both sides of the coast — and a fantastic sunset to finish.

2. Relax on the Dili Beaches

The beaches of Dili are perfect places to unwind. Drink fresh coconut water, bathe in warm waters, and watch the sun sink over the Timor Sea in a blaze of colour.

3. Visit the Santa Cruz Cemetery

A visit to this emblematic site of East Timorese history is essential. The Santa Cruz Massacre took place here in 1991, an event that helped galvanise international support for the country’s independence movement. Inside the cemetery, you will find the grave of Sebastião Gomes, a young activist assassinated by Indonesian troops during the occupation. It was during a tribute march to his grave that Indonesian soldiers opened fire on the crowd — a moment that shocked the world and accelerated the path to independence.

Islands and Coastal Nature

4. Spend a Day at Jaco Island

Unmissable. You cannot leave Timor-Leste without visiting Jaco Island — an uninhabited, paradisiacal island at the far eastern tip of the country. The overland road is extremely difficult and suited only to true adventurers. A more comfortable option is to arrive by boat from the nearby town of Tutuala or from Dili, though that is a more expensive choice. Either way, the turquoise waters and pristine beaches make it worth every effort.

5. Dive and Snorkel off Atauro Island

The public ferry (Nacroma) makes Atauro Island accessible at low cost. The waters surrounding Atauro are consistently ranked among the most biodiverse marine environments in the world, making it a world-class destination for snorkelling and diving. Stay overnight in one of the simple guesthouses by the sea for the full experience.

Mountains and the Interior

6. Trek Mount Ramelau at Sunrise

Mount Ramelau is the highest peak in Timor-Leste, and the journey to get there is half the adventure. The dramatic scenery of the interior, combined with the warmth of local communities still relatively unaccustomed to tourists, makes the difficult roads feel worthwhile. The nearest town, Hatu Builico, is the base for the ascent. Most trekkers depart between 2:30 am and 3:30 am after an overnight stay in the village, timing the climb to reach the summit in time for sunrise — an unforgettable reward for the effort.

7. Explore Baucau and Its Surroundings

Baucau is the second-largest city in Timor-Leste, located 122 km east of Dili. Key sites in the city include:

  • Municipal Market — a lively hub of local commerce
  • Hotel Pousada — a striking colonial-era building with views over the lower town
  • Wataboo Beach — a wide bay popular with locals at weekends
  • Fatuk Boot — dramatic rock formations on the edge of town

About 30 km from Baucau, the village of Venilale offers further highlights:
