Manatuto, Timor-Leste, May 29, 2019 (Lusa) – A fire, possibly caused by an electrical problem, destroyed the market in the Timorese village of Manatuto, about 68 kilometers east of the capital, Dili.

“Fortunately there were no casualties to register,” Timorese fire chief Cláudio Silva told Lusa.

“It was totally burned, people lost a lot, there was only destruction of property,” he said.

Cláudio Silva added that the first information indicates that the fire was caused by an electric short circuit.

The fire started around 8:00 pm on Tuesday (12:00 pm on Tuesday in Lisbon), and quickly spread to almost all market structures, built of wood and zinc, with no suitable means in the area for combat.

A Market at the Heart of the Community

Manatuto’s market served as a central hub for local traders and residents, providing fresh produce, household goods, and daily necessities to the surrounding community. The loss of the market structures represented a significant economic blow to vendors who depended on the site for their livelihoods.

The predominantly wooden and zinc construction of the market stalls, while common in the region, contributed to the rapid spread of the blaze once it took hold. Firefighters faced challenges containing the fire due to limited firefighting resources available in the area.

Recovery and Rebuilding

Authorities were assessing the full extent of the damage in the days following the fire. Incidents like this highlight the ongoing need for improved infrastructure and fire prevention measures in rural Timorese towns. Manatuto, as the capital of the Manatuto municipality, plays an important role in the eastern corridor connecting Dili to the rest of the country.
