Planning a trip to Timor-Leste is an exciting adventure. This small Southeast Asian nation offers world-class diving, stunning coastlines, and a culture unlike anywhere else in the region. Getting there takes a bit of preparation — here’s how to get ahead and ensure a smooth journey from the moment you leave home to the moment you arrive in Dili.

Flying to Timor-Leste

Most international visitors arrive at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili, the capital. The main gateway cities with connections to Dili include Darwin (Australia), Bali (Indonesia), and Singapore. Carriers such as Airnorth, Garuda Indonesia, and Singapore Airlines operate routes into Dili, with some international travellers connecting via Bali for the most affordable fares.

If you are flying from Europe or the United Kingdom — including on British Airways to a connecting hub — it pays to check in online as early as your airline allows, typically 24 hours before departure. This secures your seat and lets you manage baggage options in advance, which is especially useful when you have onward connections on smaller regional carriers.

Arriving in Dili: What to Expect

Immigration at Dili airport is generally straightforward. Citizens of most countries can obtain a Visa on Arrival for USD 30, valid for 30 days. Make sure your passport has at least six months validity remaining. Currency exchange is available at the airport, and the US Dollar is the official currency of Timor-Leste.

Upon exiting the terminal, taxis and pre-arranged hotel transfers are the most common options into the city centre, a short drive away. It is worth arranging a hotel pickup in advance, particularly if you arrive late in the evening.

Before You Travel: Key Preparation Tips

  • Vaccinations: Check with your doctor about recommended vaccinations, including hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and malaria prophylaxis depending on your itinerary.
  • Dive equipment: If diving is on your agenda, most dive operators in Atauro Island and Dili rent full equipment sets, but bringing your own mask and fins ensures the best fit.
  • Connectivity: Local SIM cards are inexpensive and available in Dili. Timor Telecom and Telemor offer prepaid data plans suitable for travellers.
  • Cash: While larger hotels and restaurants in Dili accept cards, many guesthouses and markets are cash-only. Bring a supply of small USD bills.

Getting Around Once You Arrive

Dili is compact and navigable by taxi or hired scooter. For day trips to sites such as Cristo Rei, Tasi Tolu, and the Resistance Museum, local taxis can be hired for the day at reasonable rates. For further afield destinations like Baucau or the Jaco Island ferry point at Com, public microbuses (mikrolets) and private vehicle hire are the main options. Road conditions outside the capital can be challenging, especially during the wet season (November to April).

With a little preparation before departure, your arrival in Timor-Leste will be smooth — leaving you free to focus on the extraordinary experiences that await.
