Ro-Ro Ferry "Haksolok": The Ship Launching Day

The Haksolok ferry — meaning "happiness" in Tetum — was launched on 26 May 2019, set to operate between Atauro Island and the Oecusse enclave.

On 26 May 2019, Timor-Leste marked a significant milestone in its maritime infrastructure with the launch of the Haksolok — a new roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) passenger ferry set to operate between the island of Ataúro and the Oecusse enclave.

The name Haksolok means “happiness” in Tetum, the national language of Timor-Leste. It is the first large vessel to leave the Mondego Shipyards since they were awarded to AtlanticEagle Shipbuilding.

The Vessel

Built in steel and naval aluminium, the Haksolok is 71.30 metres long and 12.60 metres wide. It has a passenger capacity of 377 people, space for 22 vehicles, and additional cargo capacity. The vessel is designed to reach a cruising speed of 15 knots.

The construction contract was signed in September 2014 and work began in July 2015 — making the launch in 2019 the completion of a four-year build.

Why It Matters

Improved maritime connections between Dili, Atauro Island, and the geographically isolated Oecusse enclave are critical for Timor-Leste’s economic development and tourism ambitions. Atauro Island, home to what Conservation International identified as the most fish-diverse reefs ever recorded, has historically been difficult to reach for international visitors. Regular, reliable ferry service opens the island to a wider range of travellers and supports the local economy.

The Haksolok represents a concrete investment in the country’s connectivity — and in the communities that depend on the sea.
