Ramos-Horta Backs India and Indonesia at UN Security Council

In a significant move underscoring Timor-Leste’s growing diplomatic influence, President Jose Ramos-Horta recently voiced strong support for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of a reformed and more representative United Nations Security Council. This endorsement came during his address at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, reflecting Timor-Leste’s commitment to fostering a balanced and inclusive international order.

Ramos-Horta, in his previous role as Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs, had advocated for India’s rightful place in the UN Security Council. Extending this support, he also backed Indonesia’s bid for a permanent seat, highlighting the importance of Asian representation in global governance structures.

Vibrant Gujarat Summit and Bilateral Cooperation

In his remarks, President Ramos-Horta emphasized the significance of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit as a platform for business networking, knowledge sharing, and strategic partnerships. He praised the state of Gujarat for its entrepreneurial spirit and industrial leadership, deeming it an attractive destination for investment.

This advocacy aligns with Timor-Leste’s ongoing efforts to deepen its diplomatic relationships. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India held a meeting with President Ramos-Horta, where they explored various avenues for bilateral cooperation, including in the areas of health, energy, IT, and fintech.

ASEAN Membership and International Alliances

The meeting also underscored Timor-Leste’s upcoming membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and participation in international alliances such as the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
