Although the journey can be perilous, all agree that the end justifies the means (and the broken axle). Tutuala Beach — also known as Pantai Walu (also spelt Waloo or Vallou) — is one of East Timor’s most spectacular and least-visited coastal destinations.
Getting There
The beach sits 8 km downhill from the village of Tutuala. The road breaks into two distinct sections:
| Section | Distance | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Village to midpoint | ~5 km | Rough but passable |
| Midpoint to beach | ~3 km | Rocky track — 4WD only |
Allow at least 30 minutes for the descent. It’s a fine walk down, but a major slog back up — plan accordingly.
The Beach
The beach looks like a dreamy advertisement: fine white sand, turquoise water, and near-total isolation. There are now two accommodation options on the beach, both recently opened, replacing what was previously a camping-only affair.
When you reach the shore:
- Turn right for the outrigger crossing to Jaco Island
- Turn left for the guesthouses
Jaco Island & Marine Life
Just offshore lies Jaco Island, surrounded by reefs that form part of the renowned Coral Triangle — one of the most biodiverse marine environments on Earth. The waters are ideal for both snorkelling and diving.
Look out for:
- Large anemones with colourful attendant anemone fish
- Reef fish of literally every stripe
- Porpoises
- Exceptional coral diversity across the reef system
Like many sites in East Timor, the underwater scenery here rivals anything in the region.
