Getting a visa for Timor-Leste is straightforward for most nationalities. This page covers everything you need to know before you travel.
Who Needs a Visa
Visa-free entry (up to 90 days):
- Citizens of all Schengen Agreement member states
- Citizens of Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland
- Portuguese passport holders (no visa required for stays up to 90 days)
- Holders of diplomatic or service passports from China
All other nationalities can obtain a Visa on Arrival at Dili airport for US$30 cash.
Important: The ATMs at Dili airport are located after the immigration desk. Bring US$30 in cash before you land.
Visa on Arrival
The visa on arrival grants a single entry, up to 30 days. Requirements:
- Valid passport with at least 6 months validity from your date of entry
- At least one blank page for the visa stamp
- Evidence of onward travel (return ticket or ability to book one)
- Proof of accommodation
- Sufficient funds: US$100 on arrival + US$50 per day of your planned stay
- US$30 visa fee in cash
Land and Sea Border Entry
If you arrive overland (except Indonesian and Portuguese nationals), you must apply in advance for a Visa Application Authorisation before reaching the border. Contact the Immigration Department of Timor-Leste to request this by email before you travel.
Advance Visa Application
You can apply for a visa in advance at a Timorese embassy or consulate, or by emailing the Immigration Department. An advance visa can be valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry.
Visa Extension
If you want to stay longer after a visa on arrival:

Extensions beyond 30 days require a Timorese sponsor (an East Timorese national or work-permit holder) who signs a Termo de Responsabilidade — a declaration accepting responsibility for your conduct during your stay.
