Ancient Heritage

The Sandalwood Trade
Early Interactions
Javanese and Chinese traders began visiting the island, drawn by its abundance of high-quality sandalwood, honey, and wax.
Portuguese Colonization
400+ Years
East Timor became a Portuguese colony. This period saw the introduction of coffee, sugar cane, and the spread of Catholicism through alliances with local kinship structures.
World War II
The Struggle
Occupied by Japanese forces. Timorese people supported Allied guerrilla efforts at great cost, with approximately 50,000 lives lost during the conflict.
Indonesian Occupation

Independence & Nation Building
